DEVO. 01.17.24
“Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests mourn while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
(Matthew 9:15 NLT)
- Jesus said, “They will fast!”
- Not, “They should fast”
- Or, “It would be a good idea to fast.”
- He said, “They will fast”
- He said that while he was with his disciples, there was no need to fast but when He left them, they would need to fast.
- Fasting is the primary way to humble yourself before God and draw close to Him.
- When Jesus was with them, they could rely on His physical presence.
- The physical was primary. They could touch, feel, see and hear Him.
- When He left, He left them with His Spirit dwelling on the inside
- Now they needed a way to minimize the physical and emphasize the spiritual. That’s where fasting enters in.
- Fasting will weaken your physical body and prayer will strengthen your spiritual relationship.
- Fasting strengthens your spiritual senses!
- If you have trouble hearing Him or seeing Him, try pushing the plate away and feed yourself the Word of God.
- Learn to become dependent on His Spirit and loosen your grip on your physical strength.
- You will be starving your flesh and feeding your spirit.
- In Matthew 6:5, Jesus said, “When you pray….”
- And Matthew 6:16, Jesus said, “When you fast…”
- Praying and fasting should both be normal habits for every Christian.
- Fasting and prayer with give you greater spiritual vision and help you to discern Gods will.
- You don’t have to live in doubt and confusion.
- You can break through all that stands in the way with fasting and prayer.
- Give it a try and take a step of faith!
- Deny your flesh and feed your spirit!
- Have a great weekend!
